Sony’s PlayStation games console, which had made it debut on September 9, 1995, celebrated its 15th birthday yesterday.

Sony claimed that it had sold 377 million units of PlayStation over the past 15 year, with the most successful being the PlayStation 2. The PlayStation 2 has been the best-selling games console with around 140 million sales.

The PlayStation, which is responsible for some of the best known video game franchises, such as Gran Turismo, God of War and Twisted Metal, has revolutionized the gaming industry and altered consumer entertainment experiences greatly.

First of all, the PlayStation had hit North America on September 9, 1995. The first generation PlayStation remained in the market for around five years. PlayStation 1 was launched in September 2000, followed by PlayStation 2 just a month later. PlayStation 2 was the first console with the ability to play DVD as well as CDs.

The PlayStation Portable was launched in 2005, followed by the PlayStation 3’s launch in 2006. The PlayStation 3 features built-in hard disk drive and a Blu-ray disc player.

Sony has plans to honor the successful 15 year of the console by offering free and discounted games from the original console.
